Night Taxi, 2025

Video Installation, 16:30 min

A taxi ride from Schöneweide to Kreuzberg. The driver and his female passenger, both born in different countries, start having a conversation. They share the experience of migration but have little else in common. While the camera captures the city’s atmosphere through the windows and mirrors of the vehicle, two narrators provide background information, offering insight into the perspectives each character might hold toward the other. When Elias, a young homeless man, suddenly enters the cab, the situation turns volatile The work and its form emerged from various stages of a collective writing experiment between Sugano Matsusaki and her collaborator Jonas Beile. Both artists wrote in their native languages—Japanese and German—and the text evolved through multiple back-and-forth translations. The resulting English voiceovers maintain an unusual relationship with the moving image and its narrative. As the short film unfolds, viewers may increasingly question the reliability of each narration and reflect on the biases the protagonists might carry. The work opens a space to discuss migration and identity in a city like Berlin—beyond the stereotypical narratives.
